While my B2B marketing consulting days are behind me now, I use my marketing skills nearly every day as an author: positioning my books in crowded markets, running occasional promotions, helping nonfiction authors build marketing plans, and more. Even experience with <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/amazon-split-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"A\/B testing (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">A\/B testing<\/a> has come in handy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marketing, at its core, is about getting something into the hands of the people who need it. That\u2019s what we hope to do with our books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, marketing today demands great writing \u2014 witness the whole field of content marketing. Many marketers are skilled writers, adept at shaping words that earn attention, inform opinions, and explain complicated topics. Writing and marketing complement each other like peanut butter and jelly!<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tell-us-how-your-first-book-subscription-marketing-now-in-its-third-edition-came-to-be\">Tell us how your first book, <em>Subscription Marketing<\/em>, now in its third edition, came to be.<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Back in 2015, I was frustrated by the way that marketing organizations (my clients) kept chasing the next new sale, without focusing on existing customers. In a subscription-based business, most of your revenues come from existing customers. Marketers should sit up and pay attention to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wrote the book to evangelize the many ways that marketers could use their skills to enhance the customer experience \u2014 and hence improve retention and revenues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in 2015, people didn\u2019t appreciate the seismic shifts of the subscription model in many industries. Now they do; the latest edition spends less time explaining subscription trends and more time applying the practices to different business models.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"your-latest-book-is-33-ways-not-to-screw-up-your-business-emails-why-do-we-keep-screwing-up-emails-what-are-we-getting-wrong\">Your latest book is <em>33 Ways Not to Screw Up Your Business Emails<\/em>. Why do we keep screwing up emails? What are we getting wrong?<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>When writing this book, I collected \u201cemail failure\u201d stories as research. Some were positively cringe-inducing. Most share a common theme \u2014 haste. We toss something off in a moment, eager to get on with our day. And in doing so, we perpetuate email chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we throw our emails together too quickly or don\u2019t take that extra moment to set up a sensible process, we risk wasting everyone\u2019s time \u2014 our own included!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one wants to spend a lot of time on email. But if you put a few practices in place and give a moment\u2019s thought to the recipient\u2019s needs, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/copy-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"write emails (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">write emails<\/a> that more people read and respond to.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"youve-written-about-finding-the-right-path-to-publication-selfpublishing-on-amazon-is-an-increasingly-popular-option-any-advice-for-authors-taking-this-route\">You\u2019ve written about finding the right path to publication. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/case-studies\/first-time-author-sean-rosensteel\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Self-publishing on Amazon (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">Self-publishing on Amazon<\/a> is an increasingly popular option. Any advice for authors taking this route?<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Aspiring authors have many options today, even under the \u201cself-publishing\u201d umbrella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a strong sense of the audience you want to serve and the purpose of your book, you may want the control that comes from being the book\u2019s publisher. You decide pricing, distribution, updates, timing, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you choose this indie path, I\u2019d challenge you to try to publish something that is virtually indistinguishable from books from traditional publishers. (How many readers examine the publisher\u2019s imprint?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do that, you\u2019ll need to work with professionals \u2014 editors, designers, proofreaders. You\u2019ll also need to think carefully about distribution and promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this model, you bear the upfront costs: time and money. You also reap the rewards if the book does well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this sounds like too much effort, many hybrid presses and professional services can help. Make sure you understand the business model of any agreement you make about publishing.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-else-should-firsttime-authors-know-about-book-marketing-these-days-to-succeed\">What else should first-time authors know about book marketing these days to succeed?<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>No one has all the answers! Every book is different, and your publishing path matters as well. Many of the things that others say you \u201cshould\u201d do may not make sense for you or your audience. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/how-to-sell-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Book promotion (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">Book promotion<\/a> is a long game, so find a strategy that fits you well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the secret: bring as much creativity and curiosity to book promotion as you did to writing your book. If you play it right, it can be fun.
