A former nurse, my mom owned a brick-and-mortar gift shop years ago before pursuing a career in the financial industry. She\u2019s also quite the online consumer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might have a similar story. There were so many unexpected expenses coupled with the uncertainty of income. It was by far the biggest challenge of being self-employed,\u201d said one respondent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expect the unexpected, in other words. But if there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/results\/JqkXp4Fx9K\">one thing to know <em>before<\/em> you launch your business<\/a>, what would that be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We polled another 100 small business owners to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, the issue of money topped the list. Respondents wished they\u2019d known:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>How much time and hard work it takes to start a business<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The amount of red tape to wade through<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The difficulty of finding and managing employees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The challenge in getting and keeping customers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They described the self-imposed and external pressures of being the chief decision-maker in visceral detail:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI wish I had known the amount of sleep I would lose because of how much time it takes to be in charge of something, organize everything, and solve every problem,\u201d one person said.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cHow hard it would be. How much doubt and negativity you would receive from other people. How much time, money, and energy it would take,\u201d another wrote.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what\u2019s the silver lining? Is a side hustle worth all the unknowns, aggravation, and sleepless nights?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is indeed, according to the results of a third poll we ran.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 100 people surveyed, a whopping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/results\/eu8uEgl9TI-based-on-your\">96% said a side hustle was worth it<\/a>. What about having control over when and where you work? It pays the bills \u2013 just like these respondents called out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cFor me making extra income is top priority. I need the money. I also like working when I want. If I want to do a long day or short day, it is my choice. And nothing beats working from home if you can.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cAs much as I want to pursue my passion, I\u2019m not really at that point yet. When I have made enough to have well into 5 figures in savings, that will be the right time. As of now, the most important thing is that it helps pay the bills and keeps all my finances and my wife\u2019s finances in check.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The other perks that make a side hustle worth it, such as pursuing a passion, are \u201cicing on the cake,\u201d as one person put it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The takeaways, at least for the entrepreneurs we surveyed:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting a business is worth it, especially for the financial cushion and flexibility it can provide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some small business owners, setting up an e-commerce store can be a better choice than a brick-and-mortar business. It offers a way for side hustlers to side hustle without having to rent a storefront, after all. But what hidden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/amazon-fba-startup-costs\/\" class=\"ek-link\">startup costs<\/a> should you look out for?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s get into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to start an e-commerce business.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-ecommerce-worth-it\"><strong>Is e-commerce worth it?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.junglescout.com\/blog\/amazon-statistics\/\" class=\"ek-link\">2 million Amazon sellers as of late 2023<\/a>. Should you join them and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/amazon-fba-worth-it\/\" class=\"ek-link\">become an Amazon FBA seller, is it worth it? <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need to ask yourself these questions first.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"do-you-have-the-money\"><strong>Do you have the money?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>You might be motivated by the idea of earning extra cash from your e-commerce side gig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as our polls showed, you\u2019ll need money to launch, more than you probably think. Even so, you might underestimate how much you\u2019ll end up paying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s more of what our poll respondents had to say about taxes when starting their business:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI wish I would have known more about the tax consequences and tax issues that a small business owner has to deal with. For example, I would want to know how I can reduce my taxes and get more benefits for my business through a proper accounting of the tax law.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI wish I had known how to do all of the taxes involved with being self-employed. I figured it out eventually, but it would have helped to have a resource or someone to answer my questions. The IRS website is so confusing!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, there are many variables at play.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is our best estimate of how much money you\u2019ll need to start your e-commerce business: $2,500. That\u2019s half as much as is the norm, and if that number makes you flinch, then e-commerce may not be right for you right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Timing can be everything. Speaking of, that leads us to the next question:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"do-you-have-the-time\"><strong>Do you have the time?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Maybe you have visions of running your e-commerce business while sipping a fruity drink in the shade of a palm tree in Costa Rica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time to wake up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not saying you can\u2019t live your best life as an e-commerce seller.
