This often determines whether the person buys the book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, people buy with their emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We saw this connection between emotion and book design in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/books\/book-covers\/which-book-cover-is-more-appealing-TJIFX53K\">a recent PickFu poll<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two authors recently tested two different covers for a book targeted at cancer patients. The authors targeted a female audience and asked which cover they preferred.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Option A shows a painting of a tree with its leaves falling and with a beige background.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/a91ca1ed9cb2c2063b74a5f75a9af53b9efff462.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1198 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/a91ca1ed9cb2c2063b74a5f75a9af53b9efff462.jpg\" alt=\"Which One One? Connecting Your Cover with Emotions\" width=\"500\" height=\"754\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/e603e485cce9bcbccaec01574684a12556486d2f.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/e603e485cce9bcbccaec01574684a12556486d2f-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a <a href=\"https:\/\/help.pickfu.com\/best-practices\/publishing\/testing-book-covers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">best practice<\/a>, the text on both cover designs is exactly the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you guess which one won?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of 50 respondents, 24% preferred Option A and 76% preferred Option B.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Brightness &amp; Hope<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost half of those who preferred Option B used the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bright<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to describe it. And many respondents connected that brightness with hope. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/books\/book-covers\/which-book-cover-is-more-appealing-TJIFX53K#ftext=hope\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Using PickFu&#8217;s text filter on the word <em>hope<\/em><\/a>, we find responses like these:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe brighter, vibrant color gives a more hopeful feeling.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[The] brighter colors seem to fit better with the message of hope the book seems to want to convey.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cB is brighter, more \u2018hopeful.\u2019 I imagine someone battling cancer would be drawn to hopeful items.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respondents also connected the bright color scheme with positivity. While 9 respondents who preferred Option B used the word <em>positivity<\/em>, no one used that word when discussing Option A.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poll participants made a strong connection to what the book cover looked like to what they felt readers wanted to feel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reading the book. In other words, the book gave them the emotional answers they sought.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Considering Emotions<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These responses help show how viewers connect cover components with emotions. Respondents weren\u2019t drawn to the design that showed what the reader might be feeling in that moment. Instead, they preferred the cover that showed what the reader might <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be feeling. In this case, a cancer patient may want to feel a sense of hope, rather than sadness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Questions to Ask<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When designing your own book cover, here are some helpful questions to ask to make sure your cover aligns with your readers&#8217; emotions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What emotions do I want my readers to feel?<\/span><\/li>\n<li>What answers are my readers seeking?<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What feelings are my readers hoping to feel right now?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What colors\/images can help depict that feeling?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you aren\u2019t sure which colors connect with which emotions, the Plutchik color wheel is a great tool to use:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2000px-Plutchik-wheel.svg_.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1199 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2000px-Plutchik-wheel.svg_-970x984.png\" alt=\"Book Cover Design and Emotions - Plutchik Wheel\" width=\"600\" height=\"609\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2000px-Plutchik-wheel.svg_-970x984.png 970w, https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2000px-Plutchik-wheel.svg_-296x300.png 296w, https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2000px-Plutchik-wheel.svg_-768x779.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2000px-Plutchik-wheel.svg_.png 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Source: \u00a0Plutchik, Robert (16 September 1991).<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=JaQauznPoiEC&amp;pg=PA34&amp;dq=robert+plutchik%27s+the+nature+of+emotions&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjS14-9iKnWAhVHDcAKHTpNCEoQuwUIMzAC#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The Emotions&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find the colors closest to the emotions that you want your reader to feel and select those colors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go Beyond Colors<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also use the darkness and brightness of your cover to communicate these emotions. As we saw with the\u00a0<em>90 Days to Live<\/em> poll, readers connected the brightness (especially the bright background) with hope. Font size and type are other variables that might impact emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Test Your Book Cover Design<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve created your design, seek out some<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/idea-validation\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">idea validation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can test this with a targeted audience by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pickfu.com\/ask\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating a PickFu poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
