The ribbing got so bad that OGC had to recall the logo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A representative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/1901656\/OGC-unveils-new-logo-to-red-faces.html\">said<\/a>: \u201cIt is true that it caused a few titters among some staff when viewed on its side, but on consideration we concluded that the effect was generic to the particular combination of the letters OGC &#8211; and it is not inappropriate to an organization that\u2019s looking to have a firm grip on Government spend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it didn\u2019t work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>It led to an unintended interpretation not aligned with the professional image or purpose of the OGC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Because the logo served as a source of amusement, it undermined the organization\u2019s efforts to establish a strong and reputable brand identity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-bing\">4. <strong>Bing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/1Ehq0pifbJzm4CAnN8hVnDdYBieYGlIPpAxaTW_sZZpadJsbwxZSpi8GURO62YIS2NBaifKgXByIaSAnlaawWsz4656tPHkc-R2PrYDaiCIduQtct9cfBPT1ZEnj0kjr6muxHn1AeraAlvseJ6UDHOM\" alt=\"bing blue letters logo with yellow dot.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Different blogs and readers voted this the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/1492943\/microsoft-bing-worst-designed-logo-2009\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">worst logo in 2009<\/a>. Microsoft has since updated it, but the new logo still isn\u2019t winning many points. In fact, according to the poll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/results\/ttyTdQPkkL\" class=\"ek-link\">we ran on PickFu<\/a> comparing Bing\u2019s old and new logo, the results were tied \u2013 meaning people still aren\u2019t feeling the new version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/xe3-1-YCso13AlyrYtII28rPKeyx58IjiNwK3ed61U-Lm10WUFKk7zf7JjHlIboFFYa8SlewmDWcggZMI1JAXZa_g0QQNH-jA-2YNNUa-wAve5xhoZRPFUgqH9FH8AAyMvgMTd9T_uHFVJNfuGCr9qs\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it didn\u2019t work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The original logo was too plain, without much visual interest \u2013 a problem that the redesigned logo managed to avoid, according to this poll respondent: \u201cI like the logo in option b (new one) because it looks more modern and updated. I like the way the blue shines in this option. I like the simple yet pretty design and color in this option.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The logo didn\u2019t align with Microsoft\u2019s branding as an innovative tech giant. When the design was released in 1973, it didn\u2019t stir any controversy. In fact, it won an award from the Art Directors Club of Los Angeles. But now, we can\u2019t look at the logo without seeing something \u201cunholy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it didn\u2019t work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Instead of evoking a sense of religious reverence for a priest protecting a child, it did the exact opposite. The incident is now mockingly referred to as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=Gapgate\">Gapgate<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it didn\u2019t work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The change was random, with seemingly no purpose behind it, alienating customers with emotional connections to the old logo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/bad-rebrands\/\">poorly received rebrand<\/a> because Gap didn\u2019t conduct market research before they rebranded to understand how customers felt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-pepsi\">7. <strong>Pepsi<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/o6bWbVH3DiYPxU-oPSbUlBreZTfiNGAEx7g13maA2sKnxLd82k_Y0-h1SE0BbDps0-rfHUf5nrWFreUeWN7kKZALqiVj976YgFYVyOX2BGfj8KzTEPNv1RNzEyvRmUVpv0LonLvwksbDQ1mAudgitW8\" alt=\"Old Pepsi logo\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Pepsi logo<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before 2023, Pepsi\u2019s last logo redesign was in 2008, for which they paid $1,000,000. The controversy surrounding this redesign was because of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldennumber.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/pepsi-arnell-021109.pdf\">leaked brief<\/a> that made some pretty wild justifications for the logo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, Arnell (the design company) linked Pepsi to the Parthenon and Mona Lisa, and claimed that the color palette is \u201cderived using a scientific method of color assignment based on the product\u2019s essence and primary features.\u201d What ridiculousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it didn\u2019t work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The surrounding story was so outrageous that people found the logo silly. <em>Fast Company<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/1160304\/pepsi-logo-design-brief-branding-lunacy-max\">called it<\/a> \u201cbranding lunacy to the max.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8-verizon\">8. <strong>Verizon<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/u6IDgtZQl1UUveCH0OUqRyhQDs91i4uvQP-evXMR0za3AuycPmIbca935Q5yST38AQTHkiAfXf8I7hSnzAmTSGniOq-wyijMkgTwBGVtWWuxC49-PWBsXz5SP1PTCYwNR5eN38cseT_Dn0tH6wP_o0g\" alt=\"Old verizon logo\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Verizon logo<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Bell Atlantic acquired GTE and changed its name to Verizon in 2000, there was a need for a new company logo. After years and years of people pointing out its inappropriate nature, the owners never redesigned it.
