Developing a new mobile game requires many decisions along the way. Some decisions are obvious, like coming up with a mobile app name<\/a> and designing an icon<\/a> for your game. Some decisions are much less obvious though, like choosing a name for the in-game currency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the mobile app GawkBox, you play mini-games against other creators and create your own community through live chat.\u00a0The developers behind GawkBox used\u00a0PickFu to poll 50 mobile gamers<\/a> to decide on a name for its virtual currency. The team was trying to decide between calling it\u00a0Goins<\/em> or\u00a0G-Bucks<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between the two names, Option B easily won the poll by taking 80% of the vote. Out of 50 total responses,\u00a0G-Bucks\u00a0<\/em>got 40 votes and\u00a0Goins<\/em> got just 10 votes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any idea why G-Bucks scored such a big victory? Let\u2019s take a look at some of the feedback from the respondents.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Keep the name easily recognizable <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

Between the two names, it\u2019s easy to tell that\u00a0G-Bucks<\/em> is a game currency thanks to the use of the word\u00a0bucks<\/em>. That\u2019s one big reason respondents chose Option B. Several voters left comments such as, \u201cSounds more like money and easy to remember,\u201d and, \u201cSounds more like currency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

G-Bucks<\/em> also fits the naming convention behind\u00a0GawkBox<\/em> and strengthens the overall branding. \u201cI think it\u2019s a little more consistent with the app and the app name<\/a> – it makes more sense to me,\u201d one respondent commented.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Watch out for unintended innuendos <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

The biggest reason that\u00a0G-Bucks<\/em> won this poll though? While\u00a0Goins<\/em> may be a clever play on the word\u00a0coins, <\/em>it also sounded too much like an innuendo to most of the respondents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGoins sounds too close to groin, and I misread it as such the first time, making it not a good choice for a name of an app’s<\/a> in-app currency,\u201d a young woman commented.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A young man commented, \u201cWhen I hear G-Bucks<\/em>, I immediately think of the Fortnite currency V-Bucks, but when I hear Goins<\/em>, I think of a nasty medical condition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t just the younger minds who felt this way about\u00a0Goins.<\/em> An older gentleman explained, \u201cG-Bucks<\/em> for sure.\u00a0Goins<\/em> leaves too much room for making fun of and sounds corny.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These respondent comments show that you have to think about your currency name choices from all kinds of angles. You may have chosen a clever name, but it could be interpreted by your audience differently than you intended.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
