If you\u2019ve ever had to exchange money while traveling abroad, you know exchange rates are not all created equally. Exchange $100 at one bank, and you may get back what\u2019s equal to $98. Exchange someplace else, and you may get more like $92. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few dollars here and there may not be a huge deal while you\u2019re traveling. But for Amazon sellers, when the amounts become larger, those tiny fees become giant holes in your company\u2019s bottom line.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s\ntake a closer at the numbers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re just getting started with selling internationally, you may not even know that Amazon pays you in the currency of the marketplace where you\u2019re selling. For example, you\u2019ll receive British pounds when you sell on Amazon UK, because that\u2019s the form of currency your customers pay in. Great for customer experience, but it does raise the question for sellers\u2026 how do you get that money into US dollars?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

How average Amazon sellers exchange currency<\/h2>\n\n\n

For most Amazon global sellers, the answer is to transfer money at a rate of about 3.5%* using Amazon Currency Converter. (*The estimated rate is based on actual Amazon Currency Converter transactions between 07\/09\/2016 \u2013 07\/23\/2016.<\/em>) Just think, if you transfer $12,000 a month through Amazon Currency Converter, that equals $5,040 a year. In four years, it adds up to $20,160 \u2013 almost half of a 2019 BMW 5 Series with a sticker price of $53,400. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet many Amazon sellers hand this money over willingly, without knowing there\u2019s a way to take control over their currency exchange fees.<\/p>\n\n\n

Should you open a foreign bank account? <\/h2>\n\n\n

The short answer is, not necessarily. Due to prohibitive rules in many countries, opening a foreign bank account isn\u2019t even an option for all businesses. (The countries that make it easy aren\u2019t necessarily following the same high standards and regulations that the US and the UK abide by). You might not even get a good rate at a bank, at least compared to Amazon Currency Converter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many FX rates simply aren\u2019t available to the average banking customer. E-commerce sellers doing millions per year in transactions still may not be able to access preferred rates. Banks just aren\u2019t set up to understand and provide a high level of service to most e-commerce businesses. <\/p>\n\n\n

So, how do Amazon super sellers get the best FX rates? <\/h2>\n\n\n

The most advantageous rates can usually be found from companies that specialize in cross-border accounts<\/a>. These companies may provide additional benefits including free VAT, free GST, and free supplier payments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taxes are always painful, but many Amazon global merchants actually pay exchange fees twice to settle their VAT and GST obligations. Here\u2019s what often happens: Let\u2019s say a merchant collects its Amazon payout in British pounds, then exchanges the money into U.S. dollars. When tax time rolls around, the seller must then transfer dollars back into pounds in order to pay Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re not just paying exchange fees one way, you\u2019re paying them two ways \u2013 and that\u2019s before you\u2019ve even paid your VAT!<\/p>\n\n\n

Finding the right cross-border account <\/h2>\n\n\n

With the right cross-border account, you can make free VAT payments<\/a> directly in the currency that you collect payments in. If you receive British pounds from selling on Amazon UK, all you need to do is keep enough pounds in your account to meet your VAT obligations. No transaction fees, no exchange fees. You pay suppliers or VAT authorities directly in local currency from your cross-border account. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s more money in the bank, and more money to build your e-commerce business<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
