A more complicated app is much more expensive \u2014 think a quarter of a million dollars. So to build an app without sinking your finances, you need to create a mobile app business plan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we dive into what that plan should look like, let&#8217;s figure out why your brand should develop an app in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-does-my-business-need-an-app\">Why does my business need an app?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>A good app does two things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>It gives customers a place to communicate with your brand, and vice versa. A good app will help you see the pitfalls and pluses of your overall brand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It does something valuable for the customer. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Take Craigslist, for example. For the longest time, Craigslist didn&#8217;t have its own app. This gave rise to all sorts of third-party Craigslist <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/search-find-buy\/\">search and buy<\/a> apps. The people who preferred buying or selling things through the actual site were forced to either do everything from a laptop or try to use Craigslist on a mobile web browser. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in 2019, Craigslist finally published its own mobile app. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/craigslist-app.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3664\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/craigslist-app.png 500w, https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/craigslist-app-146x300.png 146w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/craigslist\/id1336642410\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Craigslist iOS (opens in a new tab)\">Craigslist iOS<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>While third-party apps may have provided venues for feedback to the third-party brands (not Craigslist), the brand&#8217;s own app has a button just for feedback that goes straight to the Craigslist team for review. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is how Craigslist is fulfilling that essential customer communication component of an excellent mobile app. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Craigslist also provides a valuable service for customers by giving them a way to buy and sell items on Craigslist from their mobile phones or tablets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we come to the first reason your business needs an app.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reason-1-mobile-apps-are-the-ultimate-form-of-convenience\">Reason #1: Mobile apps are the ultimate form of convenience<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ve probably noticed that we live in a hugely fast-paced world. Back when I was in college, iPhones were still a novelty. At the time, a friend of mine summed up the convenience of smartphones nicely: &#8220;It&#8217;s sweet to be able to Google a question right when it pops into your mind instead of having to wait until you get home to your laptop.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now it&#8217;s impossible to go anywhere without seeing faces bent over iPhones or Androids. Instead of simply seeing if your brand has a nice website, potential customers will also check to see if you have a mobile app. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a society, we&#8217;re way past wanting to wait until we get home to look up a movie review, find a well-reviewed restaurant, or buy a new e-book. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve just started out, keep track of where your website traffic comes from. Does a lot of it come from mobile web browsers? If so, that means people would appreciate the convenience and ease of an app \u2014 which can and should give them more options than your website does. <\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reason-2-you-run-an-e-commerce-or-brick-and-mortar-store\">Reason #2: You run an e-commerce or brick-and-mortar store<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>If people buy your merchandise on a web browser, they&#8217;ll probably also buy it on a mobile app. And if <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"your e-commerce brand  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/e-commerce-marketing-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\">your e-commerce brand<\/a> targets a younger demographic (think millennials and Gen Z), you&#8217;ll definitely want to add an app to your business strategy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don&#8217;t discount <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">older<\/g> generations. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/09\/09\/us-generations-technology-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"2019 study by the Pew Research Center (opens in a new tab)\">2019 study by the Pew Research Center<\/a> found that this percentage of each generational group owns a smartphone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>93% of Millennials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>90% of Gen Xers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>68% of Baby Boomers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>40% of The Silent Generation (aka people into their &#8217;90s)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All of these percentages of people use mobile apps since they&#8217;re the heart of smartphones. Make sure that you think about what extra value your app can add to your e-commerce brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you can offer discounts and make use of push notifications. I allow push notifications from Target because like so many other Millennials, I love that store. When a banner pops up on my phone telling me that cardigans are 50% off, you can bet I&#8217;m jumping on the Target app and putting some sweaters in my shopping cart! I can also easily create Pick Up or Drive Up orders on the app, as well as use it in-store to help me find items. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This brings me to the next point: an app can be super helpful for brick-and-mortar stores. For e-commerce brands and physical stores, the value of a mobile app can be limitless. <\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reason-3-your-competition-has-an-app\">Reason #3: Your competition has an app<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>If your competitor has an app, you need one too. Actually, your app needs to offer more communication and value than their app. So study similar brands&#8217; apps and see what&#8217;s working \u2014 and what&#8217;s not. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then make your app even better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you know why you need an app, it&#8217;s time to focus on what components your mobile app business plan should include. <\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-elements-of-a-mobile-app-business-plan\">The elements of a mobile app business plan<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-1-figure-out-how-much-your-app-will-cost-to-build\">Step 1: Figure out how much your app will cost to build<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s break down why apps cost so much. Unless you have a high-tech, trained team with enough time to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"DIY-build an app, (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.proto.io\/how-hard-is-it-to-make-an-app\/\" target=\"_blank\">build an app,<\/a> you&#8217;ll need to hire someone to build it for you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveroad.com\/blog\/how-much-does-it-cost-to-create-an-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"average, it takes (opens in a new tab)\">average, it takes<\/a>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>500-700 hours to build a basic <g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">utilities<\/g> app, like a calculator<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>700-1,000 hours to build a more complex but not super complicated app<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1,200+ hours for a high-complexity app<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you have an estimate of the hours, take a look at hourly prices in a few regions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>US and Canada: $200+ an hour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UK: $175 per hour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India: $50-75 per hour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s a wild variation of prices, and there are pros and cons to choosing local versus international app developers. (Here are <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"questions to ask potential app developers (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/liquid-state.com\/hiring-app-development-company\/\" target=\"_blank\">10 things to consider before hiring an app developer<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do some quick math, if you outsourced your app-building to an Indian app developer and your app took 500 hours to build, you&#8217;d pay $37,500. But it won&#8217;t happen right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Step 2 can help you get a firm grasp on your finances before you start building your app.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-2-decide-how-you-ll-make-money-from-your-app\">Step 2: Decide how you&#8217;ll make money from your app<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Will you use in-app advertising for a free app? In-app purchases? Subscriptions? Give some free features and then charge for upgrades? A paid app?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After deciding which method you&#8217;ll use, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"run a test on PickFu (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/pickfu.com\/ask\" target=\"_blank\">run a test on PickFu<\/a> to see what your potential target audience is willing to pay. You can manually calculate your CAC using the formula mentioned in the article \u2014 business cost in a period of time divided by the number<g class=\"gr_ gr_17 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"17\" data-gr-id=\"17\"> <\/g>of customers (or app installs) gained in that same timeframe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve got that number, figure out your customer lifetime value (CLV) using a calculator <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"like this one at Fiksu (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/ltvcalculator.me\" target=\"_blank\">like this one at Fiksu<\/a>. CLV gives you an estimate of how much money a certain number of customers can earn you every month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiply that number by 12 and compare it to your CAC. If your CAC is higher than your CLV, you need to do some adjusting in your financial planning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now calculate your runway \u2014 i.e., how much time you can operate on whatever funding you currently have. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Here's the formula (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.generate.com.au\/better-business-blog\/business-runway\/\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s the formula<\/a>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Runway = (total funds) \/ (burn rate, or expenditure)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing this number, along with the CLV and CAC, will give you a solid grasp on your finances before you start app development.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/burn-rate.jpeg\" alt=\"Your mobile app business plan needs to calculate your runway, so you don't burn through your finances.\" class=\"wp-image-3678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/burn-rate.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/burn-rate-450x300.jpeg 450w, https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/burn-rate-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>It&#8217;s important to know how much money you burn each month.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Finally, create a profit and loss statement, ideally for a years&#8217; time. Find a template <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.projectionhub.com\/financial-projections-mobile-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"specifically for mobile apps here (opens in a new tab)\">specifically for mobile apps here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve got your financials lined up, you&#8217;re ready to move on to find your customer base.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-5-define-your-unique-selling-proposition-usp-and-ideal-customer\">Step 4: Define your unique selling proposition (USP) and ideal customer<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>To put USP in the clearest terms possible, in this step you need to figure out why your app is better than all the other similar apps out there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s another place PickFu can help you. Hearing a song, not knowing the name, then remembering the tune and going crazy on Google trying to figure out the name of the song. This app would be so helpful.
