It makes sense that some revered works of literature are extremely long and wordy, because they didn&#8217;t have a digital word processor to help them cut, shape, and perfect their books. Word processors like Microsoft Word have made books leaner, cleaner, and more powerful than ever before. Was it not terrible and time-consuming to have to go back and do it all at once?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/fdII1wuKvbfCqvKsOz\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/theresidentonfox-fox-foxtv-the-resident-fdII1wuKvbfCqvKsOz\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you have sources to cite or not, it&#8217;s easy to format your book to look like a real manuscript on Word. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to do it. <\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"put-everything-in-one-file\">Put everything in one file<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve always liked to write an entire manuscript in one file. When I make revisions, I copy and paste whatever I&#8217;m about to cut or change and save it as a file labeled &#8216;Scraps&#8217; so I can access it later if I want to. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"702\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/so-many-scraps.png\" alt=\"How to Write a Book in Word - Save your scraps\" class=\"wp-image-4946\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/so-many-scraps.png 702w, https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/so-many-scraps-466x300.png 466w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">So many scraps from so many different manuscripts!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Some of my author friends prefer to write every chapter in its own file, combining all the pieces later in the writing process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Either way works fine, but keep at least one file \u2014 maybe the first chapter or section of your book \u2014 in the proper format so that you can copy and paste all your work into it when you&#8217;re done drafting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just so you know, I&#8217;m working with Office 2019 for Mac here. There&#8217;s nothing like the crisp, official look of your manuscript&#8217;s title page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s the first thing an agent or editor will see, so it needs to sparkle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s what to include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Your contact information in the upper lefthand corner of the page, formatted in single-space with left-hand justification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The all-caps title (and subtitle, if applicable) of the book 1\/3 to 1\/2 of the way down the page, center-justified.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your author name, which can be the same as your legal name or a pen name, one double-spaced line below the title, center-justified.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The word count of your <g class=\"gr_ gr_32 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"32\" data-gr-id=\"32\">book,<\/g> rounded to the nearest thousand, one double-spaced line below the <g class=\"gr_ gr_31 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"31\" data-gr-id=\"31\">author<\/g> name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The genre of the book, abbreviated:\n<ul>\n<li>Picture book: PB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Middle grade: MG<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Young adult: YA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New adult: NA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Science fiction: SF<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Science fiction and fantasy: SF\/F<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Urban fantasy: UF<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paranormal romance: PNR<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Literary fiction: LF<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div data-getsitecontrol-inline=\"422708\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a visual guide to help you out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1228\" height=\"1112\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/book-title-page.png?fit=600%2C543\" alt=\"How to Write a Book in Word - Manuscript title page\" class=\"wp-image-4985\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/book-title-page.png 1228w, https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/book-title-page-331x300.png 331w, https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/book-title-page-970x878.png 970w, https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/book-title-page-768x695.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1228px) 100vw, 1228px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the next step, you&#8217;ll create a header and insert page numbers, which will <em>not <\/em>begin on the title page but on the page directly after it. <\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"header-and-page-numbers\">Header and page numbers<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>Before you work on the header, set the page numbers. To do this, navigate to <strong>Insert &gt; Page Numbers<\/strong> and set the position to <strong>Top of page (Header) <\/strong>and the alignment to <strong>Right<\/strong>. Don&#8217;t forget to add that double-spaced line before beginning the body of the first paragraph. <\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"editing-a-book-in-word\">Editing a book in Word<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve written your entire novel according to this format, you&#8217;re ready to edit. Microsoft Word makes editing simple, especially with the following tools.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"find-and-replace-the-best-word-tool-ever\">Find and replace: the best Word tool ever<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>I absolutely love Advanced Find and Replace. When I&#8217;m working on my novels, I often decide to change a character name halfway through the novel. Spend time poking around Word to see which ones serve you best.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"previewing\">Previewing<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Want to see what your book looks like all formatted in Word? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can preview the pages from afar by navigating to <strong>View &gt; Multiple Pages<\/strong>.
