No matter how often we hear this, the truth is we do make judgments based on how things look. In business, this is called brand perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brand perception can bring customers to you or it can push them away.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what are the principles behind brand perception? And how can you make it work for you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-brand-perception\">What is brand perception?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Brand perception refers to a customer&#8217;s feelings, thoughts, and experiences with a brand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Say you ask a random person on the street whether they prefer Coke or Pepsi, and why.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Coke fan might answer this way: &#8220;It tastes better. Pepsi&#8217;s too sweet for me. I like the color red better than blue. And what&#8217;s that circle blob on the Pepsi can, anyway? I prefer the fancy font on Coke cans. Consider Amazon&#8217;s commercial featuring a ballet dancer preparing for a big performance just as the coronavirus pandemic begins to unfold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"&#039;The Show Must Go On &#039; Amazon Christmas Commercial 2020\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RJFReMY6Rgw?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The ad is emotional, memorable, and ultimately uplifting. We can relate to it even if we&#8217;re not dancers because we&#8217;ve all experienced challenges during the pandemic. The ad features Amazon only briefly, but it affects how customers perceive the company. <\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-brand-perception-important\">Why is brand perception important?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>While brands can shape brand perception, customers ultimately decide what a brand represents and whether or not it&#8217;s worth sticking with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don&#8217;t put in the time and energy to influence customers&#8217; beliefs in a positive way, you won&#8217;t earn customers. Your brand won&#8217;t grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same rules apply when <a href=\"https:\/\/natfluence.com\/personal-branding-tips\/\" class=\"ek-link\">building your personal brand<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-are-brand-perceptions-formed-by-consumers\">How are brand perceptions formed by consumers? <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Consumers form brand perceptions through the five senses. (&#8220;Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there!&#8221;) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What about McDonald&#8217;s? (&#8220;I&#8217;m lovin&#8217; it!&#8221;) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subway? They&#8217;re not-so-subtle ways for you to tell customers what&#8217;s special about your brand while conveying your brand personality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s your brand&#8217;s tagline? Hotels are known to have signature scents. Restaurants emit tantalizing aromas that can turn passersby into paying customers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of this is by accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A smell can trigger all sorts of feelings, memories, and desires. One way is by surveying your customers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of a brand perception survey is to understand the concepts, emotions, actions, and language your customers use when they talk or think about your brand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to remain objective when customers offer feedback in a survey. Why or why not?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to conducting a brand perception survey, research your brand online and see what reviewers are saying, <a aria-label=\"sign up for Google Alerts (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/alerts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">sign up for Google Alerts<\/a> to see mentions of your brand online, and stay engaged with customers on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tools-for-measuring-brand-perception\">Tools for measuring brand perception<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Analytics companies like Salesforce and Qualtrics help you analyze current customers and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/nps-alternatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">net promoter score<\/a> (NPS). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to measure customer experience, also known as CX, is with a market research tool like PickFu.
