Also known as agreement bias or yes bias, acquiescence bias is when a survey participant tends to agree with a statement, regardless of their true feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be a problem for sellers, entrepreneurs, and marketers who rely on <a aria-label=\"market research (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/consumer-market-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">market research<\/a> to make decisions about their business. Our guide to acquiescence bias will help you understand what it is and how to prevent it from affecting your research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-acquiescence-bias\">What is acquiescence bias?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Acquiescence bias is one of several types of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/response-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">response bias<\/a>. It happens most often with survey questions that give respondents only two choices, such as agree\/disagree, true\/false, or yes\/no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Say you\u2019re asked to agree or disagree with this statement: black cats are bad luck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe you don&#8217;t have much of an opinion on this, but you agree anyway, for a number of reasons. That&#8217;s acquiescence bias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wording of a question is a factor in acquiescence bias. \u201cDo you agree or disagree\u201d tends to get more agree responses, while \u201cDo you disagree or agree\u201d often generates more disagree responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 10% and 20% of survey respondents have some sort of acquiescence bias when presented with only two options, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0747563215302788\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">research shows<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-does-acquiescence-bias-occur\">Why does acquiescence bias occur? <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Experts have several theories for why acquiescence bias occurs. <\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-theory-1-agreeability\">Theory 1: Agreeability <\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Generally speaking, people tend to agree out of sheer politeness, unless they have strong negative feelings about a particular topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A study about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0747563215302788\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">avoiding acquiescence bias in Facebook research<\/a> found that people tend to approach survey taking as they do any conversation. As a result, the pressure to conform to the social norms of an everyday conversation makes its way into their responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/market-research-interview.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/market-research-interview.jpeg\" alt=\"two women having a conversation\" class=\"wp-image-6142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/market-research-interview.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/market-research-interview-450x300.jpeg 450w, https:\/\/blog.pickfu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/market-research-interview-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-theory-2-researcher-s-influence\">Theory 2: Researcher&#8217;s influence<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>A person&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordhandbooks.com\/view\/10.1093\/oxfordhb\/9780199235476.001.0001\/oxfordhb-9780199235476-e-3\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">perception of the researcher<\/a> leading the survey might lead to acquiescence bias. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you see a researcher as an authority figure, you might answer in a certain way based on what you think the researcher wants you to say.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-theory-3-satisficing\">Theory 3: Satisficing<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>The Facebook research study also pointed to satisficing as a potential cause of acquiescence bias. Satisficing is when people choose a response they think is good enough, rather than fully engaging in the survey to give the best possible answer.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-an-example-of-yes-bias\">What is an example of yes bias?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Yes bias, also called <a href=\"https:\/\/psychology.wikia.org\/wiki\/Acquiescence_bias\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">yes-saying,<\/a> is a form of acquiescence bias. This is the tendency for survey participants to agree with statements or answer yes to questions \u2014 even when they\u2019re in doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s go back to the black cat example, but turn it into a yes or no question: are black cats bad luck? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe you haven\u2019t thought much about whether black cats are bad or good luck. Maybe the thought of a house cat, regardless of color, having some impact on the concept of luck seems silly. It\u2019s a cat. End of story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But when forced to choose yes or no, people often default to yes when answering questions like these. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why does yes bias happen? Experts say it could be any of the three reasons we discussed above. A respondent agrees out of politeness; they assume the researcher, as an authority figure, wants them to agree; or they think yes is good enough so they can move on to the next question.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-acquiescence-bias-an-issue-when-conducting-a-survey\">Why is acquiescence bias an issue when conducting a survey?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>When a survey participant doesn\u2019t answer questions truthfully \u2014 whether they realize it or not \u2014 this skews the validity of the results. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sellers, entrepreneurs, and marketers need accurate survey results to help them make important business decisions. Unreliable information leads to bad decisions, which could have long-term effects. The good news is there are practices you can put in place to <a href=\"https:\/\/help.pickfu.com\/en\/articles\/1984363-poll-quality\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">create better surveys<\/a> and avoid acquiescence bias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t ask yes\/no, agree\/disagree, or true\/false questions<\/strong>. As we\u2019ve discussed, providing only two options \u2014 a positive and a negative \u2014 forces people to choose between them. And because people have a natural tendency to answer positively, their responses aren\u2019t always truthful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Write neutral, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickfu.com\/blog\/write-unbiased-poll-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">unbiased questions<\/a><\/strong>. Don&#8217;t word questions in a leading way. Instead of asking, \u201cHow much did you enjoy this YouTube video?\u201d you might say, \u201cOn a scale of 1-5, with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best, please rate this YouTube video.\u201d The latter question doesn\u2019t assume respondents liked the video. It only asks them to rate their viewing experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Randomize your answer choices<\/strong>. In some cases, people think the first response is always the correct one. Or, they select the first response out of convenience (it\u2019s there, so it\u2019s good enough).
