There are some dishes only Mom can make. Sure, other people can cook<\/em> them. You can too, and maybe you\u2019ve tried. But somehow, your mom\u2019s version has always been superior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In honor of Mother\u2019s Day, we asked 100 people across the U.S.<\/a> to tell us the one dish their mom makes (or made) better than anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question yielded a melting pot of responses, brimming with comfort food and memories of the moms \u2014 and mother figures \u2014 in people’s lives. We sliced and diced the data to bring you these findings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

A whole lotta pasta<\/h2>\n\n\n

More than one-quarter of respondents said pasta in all its forms was their hands-down favorite Mom dish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, 10 people called out their mom\u2019s lasagna<\/a> and seven people had good things to say about her spaghetti<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were also shout-outs for mac \u2018n\u2019 cheese, macaroni salad, baked ziti, buffalo chicken pasta, chicken paprikash with bowtie pasta, and macaroni salad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the pasta enthusiasts was a female respondent in the 35-44 age group whose 70-year-old mother-in-law is her culinary hero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My mom is deceased but my mother-in-law is alive and she makes the best pasta salad, macaroni salad, spaghetti and lasagna, oh and cheesesteaks too. I love all her cooking really. Right now I have some spaghetti she made me and my husband, is it delicious. She will be 70 this year and I hope she lives a long time because she really helps us and makes us stuff. She has a heart problem. We try to help her as much as we can. My husband drives her to her doctor appts. She collects cookbooks and I go to yard sales and pick her up different ones. She likes those binder ones that the churches and others make with homemade recipes. Thank you.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n

Hot dish<\/h2>\n\n\n

Eight respondents had high praise for their mother\u2019s casserole. Amazingly \u2014 or not, considering casserole’s infinite flexibility<\/a> \u2014 no two respondents described the same type of casserole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the love of meat<\/h2>\n\n\n

Chicken, America\u2019s most popular protein<\/a>, was also the favorite meat in this poll, with 11 people naming a chicken dish<\/a> as their favorite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meatloaf<\/a> topped the list for eight respondents, one of whom mentioned that his mom is a chef and culinary school graduate. So there.<\/p>\n\n\n

Pie high<\/h2>\n\n\n

Pies<\/a>, both sweet and savory, had a good showing. Among the 10 who chose it was a male respondent who marveled at his mom\u2019s crust-making skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe has very round thumbs and just has great skill in pressing them evenly and symmetrically,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regional favorites<\/h2>\n\n\n

Filtering the results by geographic region, we saw a few interesting patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respondents in the Midwest<\/a> gravitated toward the very Midwestern casserole. People in the Northeast<\/a> favored their mom’s meatloaf and other comfort foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meat and pasta dishes were also well represented in the Southeast<\/a>, while the two respondents in the Rocky Mountain region had only sweet treats on their minds<\/a> \u2014 sweet rolls and their mom\u2019s chocolate birthday cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People\u2019s tastes were diverse in the Pacific region<\/a>; in fact, no two people mentioned the same dish! We saw similar variety and specificity among Southwestern respondents<\/a>, who named dishes ranging from banana bread to curry chicken to okra soup.<\/p>\n\n\n

What we learned<\/h2>\n\n\n

Thanks to our respondents, we now know what taco pile-up<\/a> and dal dhokla<\/a> are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have a sudden craving for cornbread<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we\u2019re pretty sure respondents\u2019 own mothers, if they saw this poll, wouldn\u2019t argue with it \u2014 or give up any of their culinary secrets.<\/p>\n\n\n
