Nearly one-third of Americans say <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarworks.iupui.edu\/bitstream\/handle\/1805\/25515\/crowdfunding210331-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"they contribute to a crowdfunding project (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">they contribute to a crowdfunding project<\/a> each year, according to a report by the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kickstarter, a top crowdfunding platform, is one of the best ways to raise money for your startup, book, board game, or whatever it is you&#8217;re passionate about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve launched a Kickstarter campaign or plan to in the near future, you need to know how to make yours stand out. There are thousands of Kickstarter campaigns to support. How do you get enough people to commit to yours? That&#8217;s what we&#8217;ll cover in this guide to Kickstarter advertising and marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-kickstarter\">What is Kickstarter?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing fundraising platform. You create a project goal, determine the amount of funding needed to reach it, and set a deadline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interested supporters pledge money to your project. If you meet your funding goal by the deadline, your supporters&#8217; credit cards get charged the amount they pledged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don&#8217;t reach your funding goal on time, no one pays anything. You scrap the campaign \u2014 or start over. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To set up a Kickstarter project, you need to choose a category and project title. You upload a main image, project blurb, and any additional images and descriptions that support your campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final step is to set up a rewards system outlining what your backers will receive for different donation tiers. <\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"whats-the-average-cost-of-a-kickstarter-campaign\">What&#8217;s the average cost of a Kickstarter campaign?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Fundraising goals on Kickstarter can range from hundreds of dollars to six-figure amounts. If you successfully raise the money you need before the deadline, Kickstarter will apply a 5% fee to that amount. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, Kickstarter&#8217;s payment processor, Stripe, takes a payment processing fee of 5% + $0.05 for contributions of $10 or less and a processing fee of 3% + $0.20 for any amount over $10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll want to take these fees into account when you set your campaign&#8217;s funding goal. For example, if you need $10,000 to self-publish a book, Kickstarter will end up taking a $500 cut \u2014 and that&#8217;s before<em> <\/em>the individual payment processing fees. This means advertising on Facebook and Instagram at the very least. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A smart Kickstarter strategy is to budget 10-15% of your total fundraising goal for advertising \u2014 and be prepared to foot the bill if the campaign fails.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-many-kickstarter-projects-fail\">How many Kickstarter projects fail?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Time for some real talk. This project spoke to the thousands of people, young and old, who need to fidget with something in order to focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;unusually addicting, high-quality desk toy&#8221; raised over $6 <em>million<\/em>. And they understood the importance of Kickstarter advertising and marketing: they pitched their Fidget Cube idea to dozens of blogs and websites, aiming for exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"example-2-readers-love-rebel-girls\">Example 2: Readers love Rebel Girls <\/h3>\n\n\n<p>You don&#8217;t need to engineer a fancy gadget in order to succeed on Kickstarter, though. The book <em>Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls <\/em>by <meta charset=\"utf-8\">Elena Favilli and Francesco Cavallo earned $675,614 against its goal of $40,000 in <a aria-label=\"just 28 days (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/timbuktu\/good-night-stories-for-rebel-girls-100-tales-to-dr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">just 28 days<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know that the parents of the world were hungry for a twist on fairytales? Probably not many. But Kickstarter is all about skirting the corporate gatekeepers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exploding Kittens caters to people who &#8220;are into kittens and explosions and laser beams and sometimes goats.&#8221; As it turns out, plenty of people are into those exact things: <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/elanlee\/exploding-kittens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">219,382 people<\/a>, to be exact. That&#8217;s how many pledged over $8 million to the quirky game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kickstarter backers love unique, exciting, or NSFW board games. Video-game-turned-board-game Darkest Dungeon earned more than $5 million from over 20,000 backers.
