# Survey builder (build from scratch)

PickFu gives you several ways to start a poll or survey: build one from scratch in the survey builder, use a pre-built template, start from a playbook, create from a team template, or resume a saved draft. The best option depends on how much customization you need.

The survey builder gives you full control over every aspect of your poll — poll type, content type, audience targeting, add-ons, and more. It's the best option when your research doesn't match an existing template or when you need specific customization.

Your work auto-saves as a draft while you build, so you can pause and come back anytime. Helpful tooltips throughout the builder link to relevant help articles if you need guidance along the way.

You can also add more than one question to build a survey. For more on that, see [What is a survey and when should I use it?](https://help.pickfu.com/en/articles/9078244)

If you're new to PickFu, check out [How do I create my first poll?](https://help.pickfu.com/en/articles/2287017) for a step-by-step walkthrough of the survey builder.

# Templates

Templates are pre-built polls designed for common use cases like Amazon main image testing, book cover A/B tests, and more. They come with optimized settings — including poll type, audience size, and targeting — and are often available at a discounted price.

Because templates are pre-configured, customization is limited. You'll add your own options (images, text, etc.) and can adjust the question, but the audience size and targeting are typically locked. All current templates are single-question polls.

**Where to find them:** From your dashboard, click "Use a template" at the top, or scroll to the Popular templates section and click "View all templates." You can filter for all templates or just team templates.

Templates are a great fit when your use case matches what's available and you want speed and savings. For a full walkthrough, see [How do I build a poll from a template?](https://help.pickfu.com/en/articles/14489264)

# Team templates

Team templates are custom, reusable templates created by you or someone on your team. They're ideal for repeatable research where you only need to make minor changes each run — like swapping images, adjusting the question, or tweaking the audience while keeping the same format.

**Where to find them:** Go to the templates page and filter for "Team templates" in the left sidebar.

**How to create one:** In the survey builder, click the "Save as team template" button in the poll overview sidebar (next to the Save button). You can create a team template from any poll draft.

You can create as many team templates as you want, and they can be duplicated, shared with teammates, or deleted.

# Playbooks

Playbooks are guided, multi-step research workflows designed for specific use cases. Instead of running a single poll, a playbook walks you through a sequence of polls that build on each other — helping you answer a broader research question step by step.

**Where to find them:** From your dashboard, click the **Playbooks** tab to browse available playbooks. You can also request a new playbook if you have a use case in mind.

Playbooks are best for users who want structured research guidance rather than designing polls from scratch. For more details, see [How do I use playbooks to build my poll?](https://help.pickfu.com/en/articles/14489272)

# Drafts

Any poll you start in the survey builder auto-saves as a draft. Drafts appear on your dashboard, where you can resume, edit, or duplicate them at any time. Drafts are not visible to anyone else until you launch the poll.

# Note: polls vs. surveys

The terms "poll" and "survey" are often used interchangeably in PickFu. The building process is the same — you open the survey builder and create your test.

The distinction: a **poll** is typically a single question posed to an audience, while a **survey** includes multiple questions answered by the same respondents in one session. To build a survey, add more than one question in the survey builder. You can mix and match poll types across questions (up to 16 questions per survey).

# FAQs

## Can I edit a poll after launching it?

No. Once a poll is live, it can't be edited. If you need to make changes, stop the active poll, duplicate it, make your edits, and relaunch. Credit for any missing responses is added back to your account.

## Can I convert a draft into a team template?

Yes. In the survey builder, click the "Save as team template" button in the poll overview sidebar. You can create a team template from any poll draft.

## What's the difference between a template and a team template?

Templates are pre-built by PickFu for common use cases and are typically discounted. Team templates are custom templates created by you or your team for your own repeatable research needs.
