# When should I add context to my question?

> Question context gives respondents background info — a scenario, description, or reference image — so they can give better, more informed feedback.

Add question context when respondents need background information to give useful feedback — like a product description, a scenario to imagine, or a reference image. Click "+ Add question context" below the question field in the survey builder.

# How to add question context

In the survey builder, click the "**+ Add question context**" button below your question field. You can add up to 500 characters of text, or upload an image, video, or audio file that further explains your question.

# When to use it

**Setting a scenario:** Tell respondents what to picture while answering. For example: "Imagine you're browsing Amazon for a kitchen scale. Which product image would catch your eye first?"

**Sharing reference designs:** Upload an existing design so respondents have a reference point when evaluating new variations. This helps them give informed feedback on how a new color, layout, or style compares.

**Showing a video or image to react to:** Upload a video clip, product photo, or concept image as context, then use a Star Rating or Emoji Reaction poll to capture respondents' reactions.

# When not to use it

Don't use question context to add captions or labels to your images — that approach can introduce bias. If you need respondents to understand what they're looking at, describe it in the context field rather than labeling individual options. For more, see [Can I add a caption to my image?](/help/can-i-add-a-caption-to-my-image)

Keep your context concise. Too much information can overwhelm respondents and slow them down. Aim for the minimum amount of background needed for informed feedback.

# FAQs

## Does adding context cost extra?

No, except for video content. If you include a video in your context, it costs the same additional amount as including video options, since respondents need more time to watch it.

## Should I use a 1-option poll or question context for Star Rating polls?

Either works. You can upload the item as a single option and rate it, or put it in the question context field and ask for a rating. We'll handle it correctly either way.

## Can I add both text and media as context?

You can add text context (up to 500 characters) and separately upload a media file (image, video, or audio). Both appear alongside your question when respondents take the poll.
