Options in PickFu are the types of content you're testing: the images, text, video, and other assets that you want feedback on. This article explains best practices for setting up options for your audience to choose from in your PickFu survey.
Each option should represent one clear choice for respondents. Keep options consistent in format and quality, test one variable at a time, and use 2–8 options depending on your research goal.
How many options should I use?
The right number depends on what you're trying to learn:
2 options — Best for direct A/B comparisons. Use a Head-to-Head poll to find a clear winner between two designs, names, or concepts.
3–5 options — Good for narrowing down a shortlist. Ranked and Single Select polls work well here, letting respondents rank or pick their favorite from a manageable set.
6–8 options — Use when you have many variations to evaluate. Keep in mind that more options means more for respondents to review, so feedback on individual options may be less detailed.
1 option — Use Open-Ended, Star Rating, Emoji Reaction, or Screen Recording polls to gather feedback on a single creative without comparing it to anything.
If you have more than 8 variations, run multiple polls and take the top performers from each into a tiebreaker round.
Choosing the right option type
PickFu supports several option types. For a complete overview — including specs, file formats, and pricing details — see What types of content can I test with PickFu?
Text — Names, taglines, descriptions, and other written content. Learn more
Images — Logos, packaging, product photos, and designs. Learn more
Image Sets — Multiple images per option, such as a product image stack. Learn more
Video and audio — Ads, explainer videos, podcast intros, and music clips. Learn more
URLs — Landing pages, live product listings, and websites. Learn more
You can't mix option types within the same question. To test a different type, add another question to your survey or run a separate poll.
Keep your options consistent
Consistency across options helps respondents focus on what actually matters — the content you're testing, not differences in formatting or quality.
Similar dimensions and quality. For image options, use the same resolution, aspect ratio, and file quality. A crisp image next to a blurry one skews results toward the sharper option regardless of content.
Similar length. For video options, keep durations roughly the same. For text options, match the level of detail — if one option is a full sentence, they all should be.
Option labels and randomization
PickFu automatically assigns labels (A, B, C, etc.) to your options and randomizes the display order for each respondent. This eliminates position bias — no option has an advantage from being shown first.
You can optionally add captions to provide context for your images. For details, see Can I add a caption to my image?
FAQs
Can I rearrange my options after creating them?
Yes. Drag and drop options in the survey builder to reorder them. Since PickFu randomizes display order for respondents, the order in the builder is just for your own organization.
Do respondents see options in the same order?
No. PickFu randomizes the order for each respondent automatically, so position bias isn't a concern.
