Best-selling author Jax Rowland is writing the first book of his next spy thriller series and it's not going well. If he can't create a deeper connection between his characters, he faces more negative reviews from readers fed up with his one-dimensional Bond-girls.
Dr. Sophie Grimaldi is successful, single and content to remain that way. Disappointed (or worse) by romantic relationships all her life, the only interest she has in men these days are her delicious book boyfriends.
When Sophie discovers a set of handwritten notes between the pages of a library book, curiosity quickly turns to exasperation over the author’s cringe-worthy attempt at a steamy sex scene. Automatically, she scribbles her own version, forgetting all about the page when she returns the book. She never imagines the author will find her revision.
Embarrassed to view his work through a mystery critic’s eyes, Jax offers Sophie a job writing the love scenes of his next novel. As sexy emails and flirty texts turn into a friendship crackling with chemistry, Sophie and Jax make plans to finally meet in person. But, a series of missed connections and unexpected twists make it clear that fate has other plans for them.
Will they heed the warning signs or choose to write their own destiny?

After the success of my first spy thriller series, I’m hard at work on a new book. With an important caveat: my agent says my main character needs a more meaningful connection with a woman who’s not-another-Bond girl. Where better to do a little research than in the romance section at the library?
The scene I came up with was pretty hot—or so I thought. I forgot my notes in the book. When I got them back, I found someone had made their own revisions. And their version was way better than the crap I’d come up with.
So I found a way to hire my mystery wordsmith as a consultant on the sex scenes. Interesting plot development: she’s more than a clever writer; she’s funny, a little sassy, and into so many things that I am. Even though I’ve sworn off relationships, I wouldn’t mind getting to know her better.

Anticipating a weekend of binge-reading, I checked out the final book in a series by my favorite author at the library. Once I got home, I discovered a sheet of notes tucked between the pages. Whoever had written them clearly knew nothing about how to write a love scene—or, I suspected, how to please a woman. My pen flew over the page before I even realized it, making corrections here, adding on there. It was a major improvement. I’d completely forgotten about the scene and my edits until a librarian contacted me with a note from the unknown author..offering me a job.
Turns out, he’s a pretty good writer and we actually have a lot in common. Sounds like the perfect meet-cute in one of the rom-coms I read, right? Wrong. Dating and relationships are the last thing I’m interested in after the disaster my love life has been. My dental practice is successful, I’m training for a half marathon, and I have book boyfriends to keep me warm. With such a contented single life, why can’t I stop thinking about the author I’m working with, wondering, what if?
